Course Description: Onsite Babysitting Training

Special Arrangements for Students:

For the comfort and enjoyment of our students, the course includes special provisions:

  • Supplies: Students will be provided with art supplies for creative activities and snacks tailored to dietary restrictions, thoughtfully organized by program organizers.
  • Bring a Stuffed Animal: Each student should bring their own stuffed animal to enhance the learning experience and make the day even more enjoyable.
  • Engaging Activities: The day will be filled with fun and educational games and discussions that are specifically designed to enhance the learning process.

Course Overview:

The Canadian Red Cross Babysitting course has been refreshed and updated with a heightened focus on First Aid skills. This comprehensive program covers a wide range of essential topics, from managing challenging behaviors to instilling critical content on leadership and professional conduct as a babysitter. The course aims to deepen and enhance the sense of responsibility that older youth feel when caring for younger children. Additionally, the updated curriculum, enriched with new scientific insights, ensures improved learning, particularly in providing the right care in the event of an emergency.

Instructor:

Your instructor is a dedicated Youth Leader with extensive experience in babysitting and child care.

Prerequisite: Ages 11 to 15* (Please note age requirements for participation)

Course Content – First Aid Skills:

Participants will learn a comprehensive set of First Aid skills, including but not limited to:

  • Check, Call, Care (which includes phoning EMS/911)
  • Glove removal
  • Recovery positions
  • Handling conscious choking (for adults, children, babies, and when alone)
  • CPR for babies and children
  • Managing various illnesses
  • Asthma care (including the use of inhalers and spacers)
  • Anaphylaxis response (including the use of EpiPens)
  • Handling poisoning cases
  • Dealing with insect stings
  • Wound care (minor cuts, scrapes, splinters, nosebleeds, bumps, bruises, life-threatening bleeding, burns)
  • Responding to head, neck, and back injuries
  • Managing broken bones
  • Addressing seizures

The course materials include a reference text with embedded critical thinking activities to reinforce the content.

Take-Home Materials:

Participants will receive a comprehensive Babysitter’s Manual to continue learning and practicing their skills.
