Course Overview: EMR Recertification

This course is intended for individuals who currently hold a valid (or recently expired) Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification and are looking to renew their credentials for another 3 years.

The recertification also includes the BC EMALB Scope of Practice Schedule 1 & 2 update, which is required for licensing through BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) and Fire Services.

Prerequisites:

  • Proof of a current or recently expired EMR certification (Red Cross or equivalent recognized by the Paramedic Association of Canada)

  • Prior completion of full EMR course

  • Standard First Aid with CPR C (recommended)


Completion Requirements:

To successfully recertify, participants must:

  • Attend 100% of the recertification course (40 hours total)

  • Demonstrate all critical skills to the required standard

  • Pass two evaluated scenarios (1 trauma, 1 medical)

  • Score minimum 75% on the written exam


Certification Awarded:

  • 3-Year Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Recertification

  • BC EMALB Scope of Practice Schedule 1 & 2 Update Completion

  • Digital certificate issued upon successful completion

After You Recertify: Licensing in BC

Once recertified, you can:

  • Maintain or renew your EMA license with the EMALB

  • If required, schedule your BC licensing exam evaluations (written + practical)

  • Ensure you continue to meet current Schedule 1 & 2 Scope of Practice standards
