Course Description: Welcome to our comprehensive Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) training course, aligned with CSA and WorkSafeBC standards. This course is designed to equip participants with essential skills and knowledge to safely operate SCBA units in hazardous environments. With a blend of online theory and hands-on practical training, this program ensures that participants are well-prepared for the challenges of working in confined and hazardous spaces.

Course Format: Our training program offers a balanced approach that combines a 4-hour online theoretical segment with a 4-hour in-person practical session. Currently, our training is exclusively conducted on-site to provide participants with a realistic learning experience. To ensure optimal preparedness for the practical session, participants are required to complete the online portion at least 24 hours before the scheduled in-person training.

Scheduling Consideration: Please note that while the practical training session can be scheduled prior to completing the online portion, it is crucial to ensure completion of the online module at least 24 hours before the course’s commencement. This ensures that you’re well-prepared for the practical training and can make the most of this immersive learning experience.

Equipment Familiarity: We prioritize providing a training experience that closely mirrors real-world scenarios. Therefore, all equipment used during training closely resembles the actual gear participants will be using in their workplaces. This ensures that participants are familiar with the equipment they’ll rely on for their safety.

Course Highlights: Protective breathing apparatus is indispensable for workers who might be exposed to hazardous environments. Failure to use this equipment could result in unsuccessful rescue attempts, injuries, or even fatalities. This course aims to empower participants with comprehensive knowledge, including:

  • Understanding potentially hazardous environments and the necessity of protective breathing apparatus.
  • Requirements for wearing protective breathing apparatus.
  • Proper procedures for donning, doffing, and inspecting the apparatus.
  • Care and maintenance of SCBA equipment.

Types of SCBA: Participants will delve into the two types of SCBA: belt-mounted regulators (BMR) and mask-mounted regulators (MMR). Additionally, participants will explore the distinctions between open and closed-circuit SCBA units.

Course Contents:

  1. Related Legislation: Gain insight into the legislative framework governing SCBA usage in compliance with CSA and WorkSafeBC standards.
  2. Human Physiology: Understand the physiological considerations of working in hazardous environments and the importance of proper respiratory protection.
  3. Limitations of SCBA: Learn about the limitations of SCBA units and factors that may impact their effectiveness.
  4. Hazardous Environments: Explore various hazardous environments where SCBA units are essential for worker safety.
  5. Pre-use Inspections: Acquire the skills to perform thorough pre-use inspections to ensure the readiness of SCBA equipment.
  6. Components of SCBA: Familiarize yourself with the key components of SCBA units and their functions.
  7. Donning SCBA: Learn the proper techniques for donning SCBA equipment efficiently and effectively.
